Day 20 Tuesday 25.11.2008 Position: S 74° 21.81' W 009° 24.5' Distance: 21km Elevation: 1920m It is just unbelievable! In the morning we started with kiting - and lasted only 1 hard-fought km before the wind stopped. We changed gear and manhauled through the swamp for 7 km. Then the wind started up again and good. We ignored it for an hour though, as to not get disappointed again. Intuitively we felt Sara was to be trusted and changed into kiting gear. The angle was steep but we got to the waypoint marking the beginning of the ascent with its many twists and turns to the Antarctic Plateau. We couldn't believe it but by the time the winds stopped we were blown up to over 1900m! Which is truly awesome because at the end of the day we did 1hr of manhauling and managed only 1.2km. The snow is so soft and the slope so steep, it would have taken us a week walking up these mountains!! Not to mention the agony as the air is getting noticably thinner as well... It may yet take some time, if we have to walk the rest of the way to the plateau at 2200m - but thank god for Sara bailing us out today bigtime! 25 Nov, 08 - 20:41 | Dispatch library Aloha Antarctica – Never again?
