Novo Station Armin and Dieter in front of Ilyushin We arrived yesterday at 04:00 GMT at Novo Airbase. Sunshine, air temperature at -15 C and light easterly winds made for a most beautiful welcoming atmosphere to Antarctica. Unfortunately we were not able to continue on to Neumayer due to inclement weather conditions there. So we are enjoying russian hospitality and courtesy at the ALCI guesthouse at Schirrmacher Oasis opposite of Novo Station. Armin's concern about being offered Vodka at every opportunity was finally elayed when we discovered the magical phrase: 'No thanks, we are sportsmen.' This seems to be the only accepted excuse allowing us to save face at the same time. It looks like we will be enjoying the russian courtesy until monday, as the weather is forecasted to clear up at Neumayer then.
