Icebog from 31.10.2008

This is our last day here in Capetown. Due to all preparations being going extremely well, we were able to take the day off yesterday and went to Cape Point, the most south-westerly point in South Africa and Cape of Good Hope. Again we were blessed with sunshine, 30 degree weather and stunning white beaches. Seeing as the coming 3 months will be quite a sensory deprivation, this was a real treat to experience and lifted our spirits. We also went to visit a colony of African Penguins at Boulders Beach. At a dinner with TAC officials, we received the latest weather and logistical updates. Weather at Novo Station and the Ektroem Shelf ice is favourable and our flights should go ahead as planned. We will receive last confirmation at 7pm tonight and if everything is a go, we will leave Cape Town at 23:30, heading to Antarctica. After unloading and transferring equipment to the smaller planes, we will depart immediately to the vicinity of Neumayer station. Weather on the Ekstroem shelf ice is currently reported to be at -10 degrees Celsius with north-easterly winds at about 26 km/h and a cloud ceiling of about 200m. Weather in and around the British station remains dismal and the station has been closed for air traffic for the next 5 days. One plane is already at Neumayer station. The two remaining planes will attempt to fly today from Ushuaia, Argentina to a different station, so logistical operations are not compromised too much. All is well on our end and we are extremely anxious to get going and ready for the adventure of a Lifetime. Aloha, Armin and Dieter
